I have started or jumped into bench rest shooting (comps) just for the fun of it. I have been shooting prone for some time and various other disiplines. Anyway I have a question. How do you control your pulse! yes pulse!
i can control the breathing no problem but at a 20 yard target I am averaging a score of 190 out of a total of 220 for a perfect score.

I know its not easy but I can feel the pulse and see the pulse in my scope. I know its comming from my right hand... just as I am about to pull the trigger it increases and it becomes a guessing game (to some extent) where the shot will go.

I am thinking do I go for a glove... will that aide my shooting.

Thank you all for your help.

Jon

Jon,
I shoot free recoil and the just outside of my thumb and trigger finger are the only part of me that make contact with the gun and I get zero pulse.

But some sit too close to the bench and get a pulse beat from the ribs area making contact with the bench top and don't realize it, so look at that too.

I am open to ideas and suggestions.. I am currently first in my division but I am also in the lowest division.. well you gotta start somewhere right.

Thank you again for your help.. I will have a good look and see if that does the trick... I might need to invest in a thumbhole stock for the anchultz.. (spelling) but yeah.. will try.. thanks again! Very Happy

Hi Jon,
it sounds like you are shooting un supported at the butt of the rifle, are you shooying C&N Comp? if so then a prone glove will do the job for you.

cheers, Gatekeeper

lmao ... do you want a laugh... because I had one when I found out what was wrong....

I have been shooting for a number of years... and also coach others on prone etc... but this is the first time doing bench rest... so I didnt have a clue... and like many thought how difficult can this be..

well I am a numpty!!!! yep... i have been shooting with my right elbow unsupported.. it was holding the butt of the rifle and not on the table because of the design of the table... I only found this out when I asked a coach to obvserve me and spend one of his weekends before reading the rules of comp etc... then we found out I had my right (trigger hand, arm) free floating.. what a piggen numpty do I feel like now..

anyway shot 4 cards and averaged 202 between the 4... instead of the 180-190 before with inconsistant shots... I am now shooting a steady and consistant card...

laugh away.. I did.

Forget everything you learned in shooting prone, except trigger control.BR is a lot about the harmony in your equipment.
Well...I always shoot with a free floating right arm.In this way I don't move the benchtop so I have less fliers.Check it out:look at your target in the scope and move your arm a little. You will see movement. If not you have very stirdy benches (we don't)

As Mr.Armstrong sugested shoot free recoil touching your rifle (and indeed the bench) as little as possible.Don't put your cheek against it,don't hold your grip firmly or shoot with forefinger and thumb only if possible.Your pulse will be gone(in the scope that is Laughing )

This way of shooting needs a good rest and rear bag though.Invest in that.I did and I moved in BR50 from max.245 to 248(rare)249 250 with high X.

Put a good tuner on your Anschütz (I have a Cicognani fat1) and a 3" plate to widen your standard stock (Cicognani makes it in leightweight carbon)

Try shooting premium ammo:rws r50 is my favourite,Lapua center-x midas or x-act is good too.Mine dislikes Eley black box.
Good ammo is much more consistant, tolerances are very tight.rws r50 has almost no weight difference:a few in a brick are 0.1 grains heavier or leighter, the difference in rimthickness is good too and so is concentricity of the bullit.

More budget friendly ammo I like was sk standard plus or the former lapua super club, but expect 2 to 5 fliers a box.

And if you shoot outdoors (my dream) you will need to read the wind too.But I can't help you with that.

Take a look at

I am not allowed to use bags on the butt of the rifle... the comp rules state this!

sadly there is a differance in compititions I think...

I will try to get ahold of the copy and upload them on here if thats ok with the mods... and then you can all see.. but its the nsra 25yard shoot.

Hi Jon,
You also shoot a different target in the NSRA comp. A modified version of the bondage 10 spot. We tried it at our club a couple of years ago but nobody liked it. We weren't entirely happy with the scoring either. Why not try the UK22BR comp as well, one card a month, not a great hardship and you can use a back bag.

AAShooter...

Thank you again for the cards... they arrived this morning and I want to say a big and personal thank you.... I will cover the postage...

I will bring this to my club on friday night and show the rest of the group these targets...

we shoot at 20 -25 yards.... i do know we have access to a out door range for up to 100 yards.. so the 50 yard card will need to be shot there... but I am impressed.. they are more than double the size I shoot... but the target is the same.
