I've tried to find my way around this minefield without too much success.
If you google 'Eagle eye sight'

you get an informative post of an NRA 2006 report.
But this only goes part way.

A while ago I picked up off e-bay an oldish small 'diopter'- this is the best bit of kit I have found for a long time - it screws into the rearsight and by turning the outer sleeve you can bring the foresight aperture into clear focus. I wonder if I put an eagle eye into the foresight would this give me both target and foresight aperture into sharp focus? If yes - probably disallowed.

There is no makers name on the diopter - could be Anschutz? - any ideas?

Any information or links to advice on the use of diopters and lenses - and legality for various target/benchrest disciplines gratefully received.

John

Hi John.
I think you need to try the combination, and if it works I can't see why it would disallowed,It seem's to me its just like fitting a scope.[IMO]
No doubt some one will have other idea's but I'v not seen anything written which would bar you from shooting benchrest with iron sights.
Some of the prone shooters at our club have shot the nsra benchrest cards with with iron sights and did ok ,but I cant see the centre without at least a 24 power scope.Good luck with the project.

Hi John,
I think you'd struggle if trying to use UKBR22 type targets with a diopter sight, even with magnifiers, the targets simply weren't designed for this. It would be extreemly difficult to get any sort of recognisable sight picture with so little 'black' on the diagrams.

Regards,

Under ISSF rules you can only use plain or Polarising filters in either or both the rear and foresight of a "Diopter" sight. For eyesight correction you have to use a pair of shooting glasses. NSRA rules are as follows
"Aperture. A rearsight, including tube sights, which may if so desired have attached a single lens or system of
lenses not containing an aiming point as a substitute for, or in addition to, prescribed spectacles. Plane light absorbing filters may be used."
So it looks like you would be able to use the lens in the rear sight as well as an Egale Eye in the front under NSRA rules. It would of course be OK for Any Sights competetions as well.
The UK NRA do not allow the use of an Egale Eye with a lens in the rear sight, for fullbore target rifle shooting, but lenses forming a simple Galeian Telescope are allowed in Match Rifle, but then Match Rifle allows the use of Telescopic sights anyway.
Using a Diopter sight for benchrest using UKBR22 targets as has already been said is not really going to work, for two main reasons. Firstly the aiming point is the wrong colour, you need a good black dot aiming mark in order for the diopter to work properly. The second problem is that the aiming marks on the UKBR22 targets are too close together to allow a suitable size foresight ring without the ajacent aiming marks intruding into the sight picture.

Thanks all for the info - I also raised this on RimfireCentral.com under optics and there is a lot of good info coming from there.

I wasnt proposing using this specifically for serious benchrest - I tend to play around with scopes/sight tubes/optics etc and use a benchrest set-up to give me a stable base.

Please keep it coming
Regards
John
